Deep understanding of your product or service users and what they are trying to accomplish through your product or service, is critical to innovation and growth in all businesses. Design thinking is a collaborative process for the empathic and comprehensive understanding of users and their latent needs to create innovative products and services.

Design thinking starts with identifying a product or service opportunity through deep and empathic understanding of targeted user needs. It then involves working collaboratively with targeted users through several prototyping and test cycles to develop an appropriate product or service that effectively meets most of the identified needs.

Design thinking has always been an essential part of the training of industrial designers and architects. More recently design thinking has been identified as an essential tool for the effective training of entrepreneurs and business managers at all levels.

This workshop will enable participants who have no familiarity with design thinking to undergo several in-class exercises and case studies to practically experience the design thinking process. Participants will also explore the potential of design thinking methods when applied to their own industry.

Benefits of Attending

The program will introduce the design thinking framework currently used in practice. Participants will undergo simple exercises and reflections on immersive research, challenge framing and prototype testing. They will discuss practice cases on design thinking in business. Participants can then use the design thinking methods learnt with their work teams.

Who should attend?

Middle to senior level managers, client-facing business process and strategy consultants and entrepreneurs who wish to hone their business thinking and innovation skills and have no prior exposure to design thinking would benefit the most from this program.

Design Thinking Framework: Video Case Study

We start with a discussion on why design thinking is useful in work life, the nature of design activity and good design as the confluence of the possible, usable and valuable. We will use a one-minute product video as a case to discuss the user perspective, the company perspective and the competition perspective in design.

Instructor: Ganesh N Prabhu, Professor, Strategy, Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore

  • 3:00 PM – 4:00 PM

Process View of Design Thinking Case: Starting of Ather Energy

This session presents an iterative thinking process perspective of design thinking. It highlights the importance of empathizing, challenge framing, ideation, prototyping, and testing. To see these aspects in action in an industry setting, participants will discuss the Ather Energy case study in small groups.

Instructor: Vinay Dabholkar, President, Catalign Innovation Consulting

  • 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM

Immersive Research: Tools and Techniques (Exercises)

In this session, we will look at the key elements of immersive research. Participants will interview each other to get a feel of the empathic interviewing process. Subsequently, they will learn to use a tool like journey-mapping to synthesize the data generated by the immersive research.

    Challenge Framing and Ideation (Exercises)

This session continues with the hands-on exercise where participants will learn to use metaphors to frame a concrete challenge. We will also look at various problem-solving methods and generate a few ideas for prototyping and testing.

Instructor: Vinay Dabholkar, President, Catalign Innovation Consulting

  • 3:00 PM – 4:00 PM

    Prototyping and Test Cycles (Exercises)

This session involves getting hands-on experience of using different types of rapid prototyping methods and tools such as storyboarding and paper modeling. We will learn how to build working prototypes in a matter of hours. We will understand the "fail fast" principle and the role of testing in the iterative process.

Instructor: Vinay Dabholkar, President, Catalign Innovation Consulting

  • 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM

Design Thinking for Product Innovation (PPT Case)

In the closing session we will use a slideshow case study to see the design thinking process implemented by a design firm to improve on a simple device for a client firm. The innovative design developed through design thinking with better ergonomics and aesthetics created a large international market for the new product.
